A Network Provisioning Scheme Based on Decentralized Bandwidth Auctions

چکیده
With the rapidly increasing interest in providing QoS in the Internet, Internet pricing has now been recognized to be a cornerstone of the Internet of the future. Over the last couple of years, this has led to establishing ”Internet Economics” as a new research area of its own, which investigates packet-switched networks from an economical rather than an engineering perspective. In this context, pricing Internet services has always been the central focus of this research, leading to a huge variety of proposed mechanisms (as surveyed e.g. in [11] or [12]). Starting with the seminal ”smart market” approach due to MacKie-Mason [2], the usage of auctions has gained some popularity in this context. Whereas the original smart market proposal dealt with second-price auctions on a packet level, subsequent proposals like the ”Progressive Second-Price” (PSP) mechanism due to Lazar and Semret [13] are able to deal with flows over arbitrary divisible capacities. More recently, some efforts have been directed towards the case of auctions for multi-link paths [14] and/or multi-period sessions [5].

A distributed auction-based algorithm to allocate bandwidth over paths
In the literature, Vickrey-Clark-Groves (VCG) double-sided auctions have been applied to inter-domain traffic exchange because they provide incentives to be truthful and lead to an efficient use of the network, among relevant properties of mechanism design. Unfortunately, the resulting resource allocation scheme is neither budget-balanced nor solvable in a decentralized way, two important prope...
متن کاملPerformance Analysis of a Simplified Call Admission Control Scheme for Multimedia Wireless Network
One of the key mechanisms for QoS provisioning is the call admission control, which manages system resources based on application QoS requirements. To address the QoS provisioning issue in the multimedia wireless network, we have proposed a conservative and adaptive QoS (CAQoS) provisioning model. CAQoS is designed to optimize the existing CAC scheme based on two parameters, which are the conse...

Multipath bandwidth provisioning is one of the prime interest of next generation optical networks. It is a policy to distribute the requested bandwidth in multiple link disjoint paths on the basis of some optimization function. It also helps to increase network throughput. By using backup path provisioning, we can meet availability requirement of service level agreement (SLA). But multipath ban...

متن کاملResource allocation scheme for QoS provisioning in microcellular networks carrying multimedia traffic
We propose a new resource allocation scheme based on the concept of resource reservation and resource renegotiation. The new scheme is aimed at improving performance with regard to new call blocking rate, handoff dropping rate, forced call termination rate, and average bandwidth use. We compare our scheme with other schemes. The performance is evaluated by using simulation. Copyright 2001 Joh...
